The plan was developed to introduce a fixed terminus at Hammersmith to help improve reliability and capacity on the line and was the first phase of the Sub Surface lines upgrade, (which also includes a fleet of new air conditioned trains and a new signalling system).

As Howard Collins (the Chief Operating Officer) pointed out at the time; "The added benefit will be the improved service on the Hammersmith & City Line from Edgware Road round to Hammersmith, almost doubling the frequency on that route."

The ‘eastern’ end of this project required a Train Crew Accommodation Facility (TCA) to be installed at Edgware Rd tube.

The location chosen was Griffiths House a TfL 5 storey building adjacent to the station.

wpa were required to design a re-fit for 2 floors, forming a self contained resilient shell within the fully occupied building and creating a bridge link to the station from the building.

The installation was required to meet TfL’s stringent energy requirements while hooking up to existing m&e and data/IT systems.
